Groton wins second USDA Farm to School implementation grant for $100,000

The board approved acceptance of a $100,000 USDA Farm to School implementation grant that administrators said will expand the district's in-house food processing, staffing and garden-education partnerships.
Shannon Weigel told the board Groton Public Schools was one of 67 entities nationally selected and one of three in Connecticut; she said the grant will fund continued staff labor, a production-kitchen manager, additional refrigeration and freezer capacity, and expanded partnerships with a local nature center for early-childhood garden training and field trips. "Groton Public Schools and the food service department was selected for another $100,000 implementation grant from the USDA," she said. The board approved accepting the grant 9–0.
Ernie (food-service lead) described prior seed and earlier implementation grants that helped build gardens, hire a farm-to-school coordinator and install greenhouses; this award will extend staffing and equipment for processing and distribution.
