Newton Traffic Council voted unanimously to clarify and more strictly mark a no-parking zone on Charles Bank Road west of Saint James Street, approving a 75-foot corner clearance (TPR1078) to reduce conflicts with turning trucks and protect sidewalks and front-yard property.
Resident Susan Bathon described repeated incidents in which trucks could not complete the turn without mounting the sidewalk, causing property damage: "A month ago, a semi truck came into my property... I've suffered $5,000 worth of damage." Other residents raised concerns that removing parked cars could increase passing speeds and urged further pedestrian-safety measures and evening speed studies. City staff and the traffic engineer recommended keeping the marker at 75 feet and adding an arrow to the sign to clarify the restricted zone; staff said a 75-foot marker would be adequate and easiest to implement quickly.
The council approved the change (TPR1078) 5–0; the new sign language will be posted after the 20-day appeal window if there is no appeal.
