The Traffic Council approved removal of up to four parking spaces on Florence Street as part of site-condition requirements for a forthcoming Sunrise Senior Living development (TPR1077). The measure passed with three votes in favor and two abstentions.
Developer representatives and the project’s traffic consultant said the existing turn from Route 9 into Florence Street creates unsafe sight-line conditions and that removing the parking stalls, combined with geometric redesigns submitted at 25% design, will tighten the turning radius and reduce approach speeds. Randy Hartger, the project engineer, said the redesign "tightens that up" and will make it harder to make the turn at the same speed as today. Resident Mitch Fishman said removing parked vehicles could open a clear path and risk increasing cut-through speeds; Fishman abstained from the final vote.
Councilors debated whether to hold the item for further review or approve now because construction is beginning; staff and the petitioners said the removal is a condition of the council order and was vetted during the special-permit review. The action is subject to the standard 20-day appeal period.
