District to add three instructional coaches and six excess teacher positions as part of back‑to‑school staffing plan

The San Felipe‑Del Rio CISD Board approved a package of staffing additions on July 27 designed to address anticipated gaps in student achievement and co‑teaching outcomes. Administration asked for three instructional coaches to be funded from Title II Part A and assigned to Chavira, Lamar and Calderon elementaries; the board approved the request unanimously.
"Therefore, in anticipation of those results, we are asking you to approve 3 instructional coaches," Dr. Carlos Rios told trustees, noting the coaches will work primarily to improve writing across three campuses and will be selected from teachers with strong student writing results. Dr. Rios said the coaching positions will be teacher‑pay roles supplemented by a stipend and that administration will return with job descriptions and a transition plan to avoid pay reductions when coaches return to classroom roles.
Separately, the board approved six excess teacher positions for middle‑school co‑teach support after administration reported higher failure rates for students in co‑teach settings and elevated class counts at one middle school. Administration said the extra teachers will allow a content teacher and a co‑teach partner to plan and deliver more effective instruction and reduce class sizes where enrollment is highest.
