Cumberland County proclaims National and Black Breastfeeding observances, cites health benefits

The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners adopted a proclamation declaring August as National Breastfeeding Month and recognizing World Breastfeeding Week (Aug. 1–7) and Black Breastfeeding Week (Aug. 25–31).
Vice Chair Sharon Jones read the proclamation, which cites health organizations including the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Diabetes Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists to note breastfeeding’s association with lower rates of childhood obesity, diabetes and infections. A Mama’s Village representative thanked the board and described local barriers—limited lactation support, workplace challenges and transportation—and announced a new Haymount neighborhood location and an open house in mid-October.
"National breastfeeding month is a reminder that every family deserves the healthiest possible start in life," the Mama’s Village representative said, and called for community supports in pediatric offices, workplaces and faith communities. The board adopted the proclamation and invited continued collaboration with county public-health partners.
