The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners adopted a proclamation on Aug. 3 recognizing the Delta Gamma Sigma chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority for its community service since its 1968 charter in Fayetteville.
Vice Chair Sharon Jones read the proclamation noting the chapter’s Project Bridal Care, a Women’s Wellness Initiative and swim-safety programs that the county said support maternal and infant health and youth development. Helen Owens, who identified herself as the 20th national president of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, thanked the board for the award and accepted the proclamation on behalf of the chapter.
"My name is Helen Owens," Owens said during brief remarks, adding the organization is grateful for local partnerships. Chairman Kirk Devier signed the proclamation on behalf of the board.
The proclamation cites national awareness observances—National Immunization Awareness Month, National Breastfeeding Month and National Wellness Month—tying the chapter’s programs to county public-health priorities. The board presented the proclamation to chapter members and invited them for a group photograph.
