CCRASD proposes remote and project-based instructional pathways for 2026–27

The Governing Board of the Coconino County Regional Accommodation School District on May 6 heard a staff proposal for a new Instructional Time Model (ITM) for the 2026–27 school year that would add two alternative pathways to regular classroom instruction: remote learning and project-based learning. Dave Dirksen, the District's Chief Education Officer, introduced the model, explaining how each pathway would be credited for attendance and assessed.
"The model provides two pathways in addition to regular classroom instruction: remote learning and project-based learning," Dirksen said, describing the design and the assessment approach. For remote learning, instruction would be delivered by students' regular classroom teachers using platforms such as Canvas, Zoom and Google Classroom; Dirksen noted the district would also include Edmentum "following Ms. Parker's suggestion." Attendance for remote days would be recorded through student logins entered into the district's student management system: students who log in would be marked present and those who do not would be marked absent.
Under the project-based pathway, each participating student would be assigned a supervising teacher and would develop a project plan identifying estimated time, a standard of excellence and a timeline. The teacher and student would set weekly goals and keep a progress log; "if the weekly project-based learning log is complete and progress is noted, the student would be marked present for the week's school days," Dirksen said. Weekly benchmark assessments and a final project assessment rubric would be used to evaluate the plan, research, implementation, problem solving, presentation and reflection.
Dirksen also told the board the proposed ITM would be available across all five district entities—Ponderosa High School, Tse' Yaato' High School, CCRASD Online Instruction, the Coconino County Juvenile Detention Center School and the Coconino County Jail Instructional Program—"unlike prior years," expanding the model's scope. He asked stakeholders to submit feedback to him ahead of a second public hearing scheduled for June 3, 2026 at 9:20 a.m.
The board did not take action at the May 6 hearing; the district will accept feedback and revisit the proposal at the June 3 hearing.
