Renton keeps senior programs running; fitness participation rises after relocation

Parks and Recreation presented operational changes made to keep senior services running during the Don Pearson renovation. Alex Lee said the department moved fitness classes, enrichment programs and social activities to the Renton Community Center; Meals on Wheels and the lunch program are now offered through a partnership with Sound Generations at the community center.
"We've maintained the continuity of operations by relocating all of our programs to the Renton Community Center," Lee said. He added that fitness drop-in sessions and fitness registrations rose after the move, a change he attributed to the larger gym space at the community center. Staff emphasized they will evaluate continuing some expanded offerings after the renovation is complete.
Council members described higher class participation and encouraged staff to consider retaining some of the new programming configurations after the senior center reopens.
