Council agrees to pursue appraisals to explore buying nearby property for new Public Works site

Council members and staff discussed chronic constraints at the city's Public Works facility, including limited salt storage, a single small wash bay for dozens of plows, exposed equipment, constrained shop and inventory space, and repeated lot damage that staff said has cost the city and private property owners hundreds of thousands annually. "We need roughly 10 acres, for a proper long term solution for Public Works," one presenter said while outlining options to move to Galena Park or negotiate with the Point to relocate ball fields and make room for a new facility.
Representatives from General RV described their operations and the economic value they provide to the city, and staff noted the current budget has roughly $7,000,000 from different funds set aside for a new public-works building. Councilors instructed staff to get updated appraisals on the General RV parcel and to pursue architecture and cost estimates as next steps. The council expressed support to move forward and to try to time field replacements where possible to reduce community disruption.
