Council forms three-member committee to review police chief contract; police brief council on new officers and training

Mayor George Hutnick appointed a three-member committee (Gandarinho, Lame, Ruitenberg) to review police chief contract issues. Police Chief Kris Gordon and Sgt. Sanfilippo reported two new officers (Dean and Colon) will be on patrol next week and that officers received training on new rifles.
Mayor George P. Hutnick asked for volunteers to form a three-person committee to oversee negotiations and review of the police chief contract; Councilmembers Gandarinho, Lame and Ruitenberg volunteered. Mayor Hutnick said the committee will also address the current chief's contract and the council agreed a three-person panel was appropriate.
Police Chief Kris Gordon reported that new officers Dean and Colon will be on the road by themselves next week after shadowing and that the department sent staff for training on new rifles, noting, "we sent all the guys for training on the new rifles; it will take a couple of courses to get them through." Sgt. Sanfilippo said next year's budget will likely include funds to buy additional rifles so assignments can be made to each officer. Council agreed to form the committee and bring contract information to future meetings.
The committee's formation gives the council a small membership to handle contract negotiations and updates; the committee did not take further action at the Aug. 25 meeting beyond volunteer appointments.
