Residents ask about annexation and zoning as new president says boundary promises are void

Two members of the public raised questions about annexation and zoning during audience remarks at the May 27 meeting. Mr. Valletta said he was unsure how to proceed with an unspecified project and did not know who to contact about Zoning Board of Appeals procedures; Deputy Clerk Prehn confirmed applications can be submitted to staff.

A resident identified as Kevin described having purchased multiple properties that had been part of the Polish National Union holdings and said he had discussed potential annexation and re-zoning for senior or assisted-living development when he was buying the parcels. He said problems with sewer connections had been cited previously as an obstacle to annexation discussions.

President Counley said he believed past boundary agreements that had constrained annexation discussions were no longer in effect and said the village can revisit expansion: "There aren’t any boundary agreements with anybody so we can do whatever we want," he said. Counley proposed a committee-of-the-whole meeting to gather committee chairs and staff to consider next steps; no formal annexation proposal or application was approved at the meeting.
