Commissioners trim radio, technology and courthouse maintenance lines to find savings

Facing a sizable shortfall, Mills County commissioners identified several near-term, line-item cuts that could reduce spending without immediately affecting personnel. The board agreed to remove the $30,000 proposed radio purchase from the EMC technology/equipment line and to defer some technology purchases.
Chair described the radio upgrade as an interoperability option that could be postponed. "So, okay, we'll drop the 30 off the deal then," the chair said when commissioners agreed to remove the $30,000 radio line. Commissioners also reduced the courthouse heating-and-cooling repair budget from $40,000 to $35,000 and trimmed a line for EMC building improvements by $3,500. Staff said those changes and other equipment reductions would be included in the updated budget packet returned at the next workshop.
