Newcastle schools declare technology surplus; district to recycle obsolete equipment

The Newcastle Board of Education was presented a memo from IT Director Marshall Bingham asking the district to declare a large inventory of outdated or damaged technology and peripherals as surplus and to recycle the equipment through ECO Electronics.
The memo lists dozens of laptops, desktops, monitors, tablets and accessories by asset ID and model, along with hundreds of parts such as batteries, motherboards, LCD screens and chargers. Bingham wrote that items are unusable due to defect or age and that ECO Electronics will collect and recycle the equipment "per industry standard and at no cost to the district."
Board members approved routine consent items that included a technology e-waste item; the surplus designation will allow district staff to remove, track and dispose of the equipment in accordance with state recordkeeping and data-destruction policies.
