Planning commission fails to suspend rules to discuss data-center moratorium

A procedural motion to suspend the commission's rules and open discussion of a moratorium on data centers failed on a voice vote July 30. A commissioner moved to suspend the rules to allow discussion and a possible recommendation; the motion received a second but did not carry.
"I move to suspend the rules, so that we can discuss some moratorium on data centers," the mover said during the public session. After asking for those in favor to say "aye" and those opposed to say "nay," the chair announced "Motion fails." Staff and commissioners then recessed for a brief break and returned to continue the published comprehensive-plan agenda.
Commissioners and staff emphasized that the planning commission has limited direct authority to impose moratoria; any formal moratorium or regulatory change would require action by the Board of County Commissioners or amendments to county development codes. Staff said they would continue incorporating data-center definitions into the comprehensive-plan and development-code work planned for the fall and would brief the board as needed.
