The Elko County Fire Board approved the district's 2025 annual operations plan, a multi-year living document that lays out staffing goals, fiscal planning and community safety initiatives.
Chief Matt Peterson told commissioners the district had "just received a PO last week, for about another $1,500,000 in NV Energy work" focused on the Elko and Spring Creek areas and said there was unofficial word that as much as $6,000,000 in federal funds could come to Elko County for additional fuels work. Peterson framed staffing growth as a cautious, budget-aligned effort: "we want to grow staffing responsibly, grow it with our budget and so that it can be supported." He also described operational tactics the district will use during the season, including coordinating dozer resources and partnering with volunteer departments to maximize suppression capacity.
Commissioners heard questions about class duration and age limits for participation in the Fire Tech program'Peterson noted personnel must be 18 to be employed for wildland firefighting duties'and they thanked staff for the plan. The plan was adopted by voice vote.
