Fire board directs staff to draft formal agreement with City of Wells

The Elko County Fire Board voted to direct staff to develop a formal, structured agreement with the City of Wells outlining shared resources, personnel collaboration, facility use and response jurisdictions.
Chief Matt Peterson said initial conversations with Wells' city managers showed "more pros than cons" to a formal management arrangement and that Wells would likely "pay us a lump sum annually" and set aside funds for equipment and station maintenance. Peterson described existing on-the-ground coverage: "So we have a captain and a firefighter that are counting right now in Wells," and suggested that county crews would operate from the better-equipped Wells station when appropriate.
A committee member moved to direct staff to draft the agreement and the board seconded the motion. Commissioners stressed that Wells must "pay their fair share" so the rest of the county is not left subsidizing the service. The Chair asked that the draft be returned to both the Fire Board and the City of Wells Council for approval. Following a voice vote, the Chair announced the motion carried.
The board did not specify fiscal impact figures at the meeting; Chief Peterson said the district will only know costs or savings "once agreement negotiations are completed." Staff will return a draft agreement for formal consideration at a future meeting.
