Committee warned of upcoming state rule: cemeteries will have to record mortuary source for burials

The Chair informed the committee that the legislature is expected to require cemeteries to record the mortuary that provided the body when the decedent is buried in a cemetery. "They are going to be requiring that cemeteries track bodies from mortuary to burial," the Chair said, and noted that cemeteries do not have to track cremations that are not buried onsite.
Committee members discussed whether the town’s recordkeeping platform (Chronicle) could include a mortuary field and asked staff to contact the vendor about adding that attribute. The Chair said the new requirement appears to be prospective—moving forward—not a directive to backfill historical records, and asked staff to prepare for the change in reporting requirements.
