Heavy rains strain wastewater plant; staff report temporary blower shutdowns

Staff informed the council that recent storms produced high inflows at the wastewater treatment plant and forced temporary operational changes.
"We had already had some high flows, because of rain here lately... once it gets to a certain level, we have to turn the blowers off... to keep the bugs the way they like to be as far as eating down the the sewer," the staff member said. He added the plant "got hit pretty hard today" but that previous improvements done three to four years ago have helped the system return to normal more quickly.
Council members asked clarifying questions about rainfall amounts and plant resilience; staff said they have been through similar events and will continue monitoring the plant during heavy storms.
