Jill Tingey, Elko County Extension Educator with the University of Nevada, Reno Extension, briefed the commission on Extension’s six program areas and local activities on Feb. 18. She described agriculture and natural-resources work (including GPS ear-tagging for livestock and multistate invasive-grass workshops), horticulture programming and a nascent Master Gardener effort in Elko County, health and nutrition programs such as chronic-disease self‑management and the now-discontinued local SNAP‑Ed position, and children/youth programming through 4‑H including shooting sports and youth leadership.
Tingey emphasized community and economic development tools available from Extension (Nevada Economic Assessment Project, asset mapping, demographic infographics for grants) and spoke about a Karlin community coordination meeting intended to link schools, law enforcement, social services and nonprofits on low‑level crimes and resource access. She provided a needs-assessment link (tinyurl.com/elconeeds) and an annual report for commissioners to review.
"We are part of the Nevada's revised statute...so by law, every county has extension," Tingey told the commission as she summarized the statutory basis and local programming. She offered to provide additional information about costs for initiatives (such as GPS ear tags) on request.
