Ellis County sets tire‑amnesty day June 13 with limits and fees

Ellis County will hold a tire‑amnesty day on Saturday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., county staff announced during the May 10 commission meeting.
Justin Gregg, environmental services director, said the program will accept up to 1,000 pounds of tires per individual at no charge; loads over 1,000 pounds will be charged at $100 per ton. He told the board that tires containing rims must have the rims removed or the material will be charged at the regular price of $300 per ton. Gregg also said county staff will ask vehicle operators to unload their own tires; county equipment may be available but using it could add a $20 handling charge.
The event is intended for Ellis County residents, farmers and local governments; Gregg said vehicles should display an Ellis County tag to verify residency. He said the county will advertise the event on Facebook and through flyers prepared for June.
