"They are capable of ATSC 1.0 and ATSC 3.0," the operations lead said, describing Technologics transmitters the district is considering. Staff explained that modern codecs and multiplexing could enable stacking of multiple HD channels on a single frequency, subject to FCC rules that require primary channels to be carried in the standard MPEG format. The explanation included examples of bandwidth savings and the possible ability to carry local programming and out-of-area channels more efficiently.
Board members asked for a recurring technical briefing every six months and suggested inviting a Technologics representative to walk through capabilities for nontechnical board members before major investments are finalized.
