Contractor: 'Siding is failing' — owners seek plywood backing, vapor barrier and new lap profile

Joe Faldetta, the project manager representing the owners, addressed the Historic Preservation Board about severe siding deterioration at the house identified in the application. "There's no vapor barrier," Faldetta said while showing photographs; he described rot at the baseboard, missing sheathing and areas where past board‑on‑board materials were applied to hide damage. He proposed a wall assembly that includes 0.625‑inch CDX plywood sheathing, a moisture‑resistant felt and wire mesh, with a 0.75‑inch by 8‑inch cementitious lap profile to replicate an eight‑inch clapboard appearance, or alternatively a cementitious Hardie board product to increase durability.
Faldetta told the board the proposed work aims to stabilize the structure and prevent further deterioration. He said the installation would include attention to window banding and three‑dimensional trim so the appearance remains consistent from the street. "Ultimately, it is our intention to maintain the integrity of the structure, to maintain the integrity of the aesthetics," Faldetta said. The applicant also confirmed there is a separate roofing permit and that tarps are in place while roofing work is underway.
