Deputy Director Susan Thompson, who worked on the plan with county staff and outside counsel, summarized substantive changes: "We expanded the definitions, program administration, drug and alcohol testing, return to work accommodations, coordination with other county benefits, exclusions, and cessation of benefits to provide better clarity." The draft was reviewed by county attorney Nick Christiansen, HR director Sonya Stevenson, the chief of staff and the schools' general counsel; Thompson said the plan also updates the appeal process and aligns with applicable Tennessee law.
Commissioners moved to forward the plan with recommendation and completed a roll-call vote. The roll call recorded affirmative responses from Commissioners Kush, Beverly, McAdoo, Wilson, Paul Johnson, Reid and Chairman Harris; the motion passed. The committee recorded the effective date proposed as 01/01/2027 and asked staff to transmit the draft and recommendation to the county commission.
The committee did not identify any budget appropriation tied to the vote at this meeting; commissioners asked that the item proceed to the full county commission for final adoption and any fiscal review.
