Council approves Calvary Hill Commons plat and variance for extended dead-end street

The council approved an ordinance and companion resolutions to process the Calvary Hill Commons development at about 3105 Highway 60 W. Planning manager Harry Davis explained the three-part request: vacate a partially constructed right-of-way, approve a preliminary and final plat (creating several buildable lots and stormwater lots), and grant a variance for a proposed dead-end street length of roughly 2,050 feet—well beyond the 650‑foot standard. "They're asking for 2,050 feet, so that variance is somewhere around 1,400 feet," Davis said, and staff said the request reflects the city's comprehensive plan and Highway 60 master plan.
Staff reported the planning commission voted unanimously in favor and that the fire chief supported the variance, saying emergency services could be provided to the end of the street. Council asked about intended uses (staff noted potential car sales and a hotel) and approved the ordinance by roll call and the accompanying resolutions by voice vote.
