Officials Say St. Joe's Remediation Could Cost $8M; State Grant Covers $6.2M

At the Feb. 24 special meeting, Attorney Ken Reaser told the board that the "total project is $8 million, with a $6.2 million state grant." Reaser said the state may allow the City to count roughly $2 million already spent on the site as a match, and that state contact Kate Golden had indicated the grant might be increased if additional remediation funds are needed.
Acting Assistant Director James Miller said that if the landbank takes the property the outstanding taxes would be forgiven, which affects the financing and disposition calculus for the site. Reaser emphasized the current grant's limited scope: "this only includes the sit the hospital sat on and the garage. The other two building are not included in the demolition." The board discussed these funding and scope constraints as it moved to accept the deed in lieu.
