Carbondale trustees say many streets can't take bike lanes without removing parking
Summary
Trustees and staff said protected bike lanes often require significant parking changes and may not suit narrow internal streets; the town's current approach favors slowing vehicular traffic to make room for cyclists on shared, narrowed lanes.

Staff member (Speaker 1) told trustees the MAP recommendations include bike lanes in several corridors but cautioned that implementing protected bike lanes on narrow streets would require eliminating parking or other significant design changes. "You're not gonna put bike lanes on Sopris without eliminating all parking or some parking," Speaker 1 said.
Trustees discussed tradeoffs: in some locations the town has favored narrowing lanes and adding signage to make it comfortable for cyclists rather than formalizing bike lanes where driveways and parking complicate designs. The board agreed to preserve Hendrick as a candidate for more protected treatments where curb space allows and to continue testing green stripe treatments at intersections.
