The commission recommended the City Council approve updates to the City of Lucas comprehensive plan to amend the thoroughfare plan map for Stinson Road and its connection with FM 1378, voting 5‑0 Sept. 12.
Staff said the proposed alignment — extending Edgewood Drive to create a four‑way intersection with West Lucas Road and a connection south to Stinson Road — reflects earlier council discussions and engineering feedback from TxDOT and city consultants. The stated objective is to create spacing and geometry that makes a traffic signal at the connection more feasible under TxDOT warrant standards.
Residents asked questions about timing and safety. A resident asked whether funds or TxDOT action were in place for a traffic signal; staff replied that TxDOT would perform a warrant study after the road exists and that the city cannot directly install a TxDOT signal. Staff estimated the West Lucas Road work is slated for 2029 and likely complete later, and cautioned that actual timelines depend on state schedules and funding.
Commissioners said the realignment is intended to improve safety by reducing speed and creating better sight lines, and emphasized that additional engineering and coordination with TxDOT will be required. The body voted to recommend the amendment to City Council.
