Council sets special election timeline after District 4 resignation

The council adopted Resolution 2025-R-01 to call a special election after the resignation of District 4 councilmember Rob Wilkie, effective Jan. 6.
City staff explained that, under the charter, a special election is required if a vacancy occurs more than six months before the next regularly scheduled election. The timeline approved by the council sets candidate qualifying for Jan. 13–15, a primary on Feb. 18 if more than two candidates qualify, and a general election on April 1.
Lisa Lewis, supervisor of elections for Volusia County, attended and described the compressed timeline and logistics for ballots and canvassing. "If you've heard about a special election we're having Congressional District 6, it's for the Northern part of Volusia County. It's been very quick also," Lewis said, noting her office's experience with accelerated schedules.
Council members voted to adopt the resolution so qualifying and election procedures could begin per charter timelines.
