Legal counsel reminds trustees of state gift rules and holiday practice

He explained gift thresholds and reporting obligations and said the firm will continue the practice of making charitable donations on the board's behalf during the holidays.
"If you're given something that's valued at $25 or less, you can accept it, and there's no reporting requirements. If you're given something that's valued between $25 and $100 you can similarly accept it. There is a reporting requirement ... and then anything valued at $100 or more should not be accepted," Herrera said. He added the board previously provided hurricane-preparedness gifts valued under $25 and that the board will continue charitable donations to local food banks and hurricane relief efforts.
