Data-center moratorium motion fails to receive second at Rockford committee

At the Code & Regulations Committee, an alderman proposed a moratorium on data centers and directed the city administrator to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of best practices for development, expansion and operation of data centers in Rockford. The motion did not receive a second and was dismissed. "So that matter did not receive a 2nd... it is not," the chair said when the motion failed to proceed.
Following adjournment remarks, Alderman Bell said he had worked with legal on a revised draft resolution and asked legal to have that draft read into petitions and communications at the next full council meeting so the committee could formally discuss the revised resolution. The motion's failure in committee kept any moratorium off the table for immediate action; Alderman Bell's request indicates the item could reappear at the full council with legal's revisions.
