Council's climate committee flagged EV infrastructure and data-center electricity demand challenges

The council's Climate, Energy and Environment Policy Committee reported Sept. 25 updates including a statewide executive order directing jurisdictions to submit plans to meet climate goals and a county staff briefing on pending EV-charger legislation that would expand the 2022 requirement to include multifamily and some commercial construction.
Chair Ivey summarized committee discussion noting a recommendation from the Air and Climate Public Advisory Committee and questions about whether regional emissions targets are attainable. Committee staff also described a recent regional electric-vehicle infrastructure strategy and awarded grants to install charging stations in public spaces across the region; data centers' electricity demand was raised as a growing concern for reaching those goals.
