Committee confirms three nominees to Prince George's County Commission for Veterans

The Prince George's County Council Health, Human Services & Public Safety Committee unanimously confirmed three nominees to the County Commission for Veterans, approving Lashonda C. Henderson, Gregory W. Jackson and Michael Riddick in a 5–0 roll-call vote.

Chair Waneka Fisher opened the agenda item by noting the County Executive transmitted the nominees on Sept. 6, 2024, and asked staff to summarize materials in the committee binder. Miriam Brewer, the County Executive's appointment liaison, introduced the slate and said two of the nominees are new appointments and one is a reappointment. "Two are new appointments and one is a reappointment," Brewer said as she summarized each candidate's background and pointed the committee to resumes in the virtual binder.

Each nominee addressed the committee. Lashonda Henderson said she is a Camp Springs resident and an Army veteran who used the Montgomery GI Bill and the post‑9/11 GI Bill to earn college degrees; she described experience writing policy and designing programs and said she seeks to "serve on behalf of women veterans." Gregory W. Jackson described 22 years of service in the U.S. Marine Corps and work in veteran employment and program management. Michael Riddick outlined decades of Army service and veteran‑advocacy work, including roles in the National Association for Black Veterans and claims assistance for veterans.

Council member Watson moved a favorable recommendation to confirm all three nominees; the motion was seconded and carried on a 5–0 roll call. The committee record shows the motion's result as "Motion carries 5 0."
