Vanessa Schmidt told the board the office plans to use federal IDEA grant money to fund sensory rooms at district schools and to establish professional-development cohorts to grow special-education endorsements among teachers. “We are going to be creating a sensory room at Proviso East…and Proviso [site referenced],” she said, and added that the sensory-room work would be covered entirely by the IDEA grant.
Schmidt also said the office has contacted local colleges and universities — Elmhurst College, Dominican University, Louis University and DePaul — to develop a cohort program that would help general-education teachers obtain LBS1 special-education endorsements. The effort, funded with IDEA grant money where allowable, aims to expand teacher capacity to serve students with IEPs and 504 plans and to increase accessibility to certification pathways within the district.
