The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors voted to adopt an ordinance establishing a separate personal-property tax classification for motor vehicles owned by qualifying volunteer rescue squad and volunteer fire department members, with an advertised rate of $1 per $100 of assessed value.
County Administrator Angie Hill told the board that the commissioner of the revenue had received 64 returns as of noon and that county staff "extrapolated those numbers and based on the 64 people that have applied so far, if a 150 volunteers applied for this and the value stayed about the same as we've gotten so far, the tax benefit that the volunteers would receive would be about $52,000 if if $1 is the rate." Hill also noted that volunteers have until Wednesday, July 29, to submit returns.
Joshua Tickle, chief of Eliston Fire Department, spoke in support of the incentive, saying it will help with retention and show appreciation for volunteers. The board voted on the ordinance by roll call; the transcript records six ayes and one member recorded in the roll call not voting in favor as transcribed. After adopting the rate, the board later adopted a companion policy to define eligibility for the exemption; that policy passed with six ayes and one abstention (Supervisor King).
