Montgomery County honors deputies for March Christiansburg fire response

Chief Deputy Oakley described the incident and the response, saying deputies, Christiansburg Police and Fire/EMS entered a burning apartment complex and "were able to extract the families, children from the apartment complex and no one was injured miraculously." Oakley said the awards were intended to honor the sacrifice of those who serve and referenced Corporal Eric Sutton, who "died in the line of duty serving Montgomery County" about 20 years ago.
Multiple deputies stepped forward to accept tokens of appreciation; Oakley listed recipients by name during the presentation. Chair DeMott thanked the sheriff's office and reaffirmed the board's appreciation for first responders.
The presentation served as an acknowledgement of the risks local first responders face and preceded the evening's regular agenda.
