Controller reports grant submission, audit prep and personnel proposal; county eyes federal funds for sheriff upgrades

Controller Aprille Williamson said the county submitted a Critical Incident Mapping grant, completed preliminary FY25 budget adjustments for audit, and proposed removing the Undersheriff position in favor of a union captain role. County Controller Aprille Williamson reported several administrative items at the March 12 meeting. Williamson said the Critical Incident Mapping grant has been submitted to the state and that preliminary FY25 budget adjustments have been completed to prepare for the upcoming audit. Auditors are scheduled to be on site beginning April 21, 2026.
Williamson and Sheriff Brown discussed a personnel proposal to remove the Undersheriff position and create a union captain position so that promotion can occur within the union contract; that personnel change will be added to the April agenda for further consideration. Williamson also said the Soil Erosion Ordinance was postponed until the county receives approval from EGLE to proceed. The controller reported plans to pursue Congressionally Directed Spending to fund upgrades for the Sheriff’s Department, dispatch center, radios and an Emergency Operations Center; the minutes note that Sheriff Brown will compile a list of needed repairs and replacements and prepare a project scope for bids.
