Board appoints James Madison to fill District 4 vacancy
Summary
The Montmorency County Board appointed James Madison as District 4 commissioner effective immediately; the vote was 3-1 with Commissioner DeVriendt the lone dissent. Committee assignments were reassigned to Madison the same day.
The Montmorency County Board of Commissioners voted to appoint James Madison to fill the District 4 vacancy on March 12, 2026. The motion, made by Commissioner Lloyd Peltier and seconded by Commissioner Michelle Hamlin, passed by a 3-1 roll call: Hamlin, Hardies and Peltier voted in favor; DeVriendt voted against the appointment.
The board immediately reassigned committee appointments to Commissioner Madison, including alternates for 911 LEPC & LEPT, Michigan Northern Counties Association, Solid Waste Management and Local Court Management. That reassignment passed unanimously 4-0.
James Madison was one of two candidates interviewed by the board during the meeting; the other candidate was John Sokoll. The minutes record that candidates were interviewed and the appointment took effect immediately and will continue until the next general election.
