Markesan council accepts police chief’s resignation, authorizes job posting

The Markesan Common Council on Jan. 13 accepted the resignation of Chief of Police Doug Wiorke and authorized advertising for the open chief position.
On a motion by Ald. Abendroth, seconded by Ald. Triemstra, the council voted 6-0 to accept Wiorke’s resignation “with regret.” The council subsequently approved, on a 6-0 vote (motion Prill/Triemstra), placing an advertisement to recruit candidates for the Chief of Police post.
The actions leave the department without a permanent chief while the city proceeds with recruitment. The council also scheduled the Finance Committee COW to interview deputy clerk candidates on Jan. 20, 2026, indicating concurrent personnel work at the municipal level.
