Commission approves fee waiver and allows alcohol sales for Lake Okeechobee airboat event

The Board approved a request from the Lake Okeechobee Association of Air Boaters for a fee waiver covering facility rental and utilities for its annual airboat and buggy show and included authorization for alcohol sales under required permits and insurance.
"This will be our 3rd annual airboat and buggy show," said Jamie Millett, president of the association, which expects several thousand attendees and plans family activities, buggies for children and archery safety demonstrations. Commissioners noted the event draws visitors who spend locally and suggested collecting data on overnight stays to support future Tourist Development Council funding requests.
After staff and commissioners discussed insurance, deputy coverage, and the county ordinance restricting discharging weapons on park property (archery demonstrations must conform to the ordinance), the board approved the fee waiver and an amendment to allow alcohol sales with special permits and deputy coverage; the motion carried unanimously.
