Board Member Mike O’Neill moved to create the subcommittee and Patricia Love seconded the motion; the measure passed six in favor—Susan Alvaro, Hector Camacho, Beverly Gerard, Patricia Love, Mike O’Neill and Hugo Torres—and one opposed (Chelsea Bonini). Superintendent Nancy Magee confirmed that "School Funding in San Mateo County" would be the subcommittee's name.
Members described the subcommittee’s intended focus as advocacy on teacher recruitment and livable salaries and on addressing funding disparities between districts. O’Neill argued for outreach to state legislative staff and for coordinating with other high-cost counties; Bonini urged using the Legislative Subcommittee to avoid creating additional bodies. Board President Hugo Torres suggested a temporary subcommittee could be merged into the Legislative Subcommittee later if their scopes align.
The Board’s motion names Trustee Mike O’Neill as Chair of the Ad Hoc School Funding in San Mateo County Subcommittee, with Trustee Patricia Love and Youth Commission Liaison Bethany Zhao among the members listed in the approved assignments. The Board approved the full 2025 subcommittee slate in a separate unanimous motion.
