SMCOE reports openings for 2024–25 school programs; seeks to expand preschool special-education slots

Associate Superintendent Kris Shouse and Executive Director Sarah Notch presented a status report on San Mateo County Office of Education student programs as the 2024–25 year begins. Notch said the county is doing outreach to recruit families and school districts and that "there is a need in the county for preschool spaces." She said the team hopes to bring "double digit enrollment numbers" to the Board soon.
Notch confirmed that the Special Day Class (SDC) preschool capacity is eight spaces this year. Superintendent Nancy Magee added that the SDC classroom had not run since March 2020 and that this is the first time the County Office has been fully staffed and able to open enrollment since the pandemic.
Board Member Beverly Gerard asked about capacity and enrollment expectations; staff said they are working to determine the number of slots allotted under the California State Preschool Program and to increase those spaces if possible.
