Hampton Select Board adopts policy to redact personal data from public permit applications

The Hampton Select Board voted unanimously July 27 to require that personally identifiable information (PII) be redacted from all permit applications and other documents that are publicly available.
"It is the policy of the town of Hampton that all personally identifiable information (PII), such as dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, and social security numbers, be redacted from all permit applications and other documents that are publicly available," Select Board member Donald Bliss said when he moved the proposal. The motion, seconded by Vice-chair Jeffrey Grip, passed 5-0-0.
The new policy directs that PII be provided only to town departments that require it for investigative purposes and contemplates creating a confidential page for such data. Examples cited during the discussion include dates of birth, driver’s license numbers and Social Security numbers. Supporters said the change is intended to limit the exposure of sensitive data in public-facing documents while preserving information needed by investigative staff.
The board did not detail an implementation timeline; staff were asked to prepare procedures and a mechanism to accept PII securely and to return to the board with the recommended process.
