Property owner tells Ocala board neighbor’s help followed tree damage; urges leniency

A property owner speaking at the City of Ocala Contractors Board hearing on Aug. 4 described storm and tree damage to a building at 925 Southeast 17th Street and urged the board to consider emergency circumstances when assessing an unlicensed contractor citation against her neighbor. She said the upstairs unit contained sewing equipment that was ruined and that she had spent about $8,000 on cleanup and temporary protection.
"We have spent nothing less than $8,000 cleaning all of the streets because our property line is literally just right there," the property owner said, explaining that fallen trees and broken glass prompted quick action. She called the respondent, Larry Hyer, a helpful new neighbor who assisted with emergency repairs and said the household would pursue the permitting and compliance steps needed going forward.
Board members and staff acknowledged the damage but emphasized that the classification of the space as commercial meant that licensed contractors and active permits were required for the work performed. Staff said a separate case for the property owner would be pursued and that the owner was being given reasonable time to comply with permitting requirements. The board ultimately voted to assess fines and costs against the respondent; staff provided instructions for payment and next steps for both proceedings.
