Board favors seed‑based approach for pollinator garden, cautioned to use native mixes

At the Sept. 5 meeting the Chair proposed using remaining space in the pollinator garden for fall seeding and buying a small amount of topsoil to support germination, saying it would be a low-cost approach compared with installing shrubs. The Chair also proposed spreading sunflower seed on the skate-park hillside under utility lines, noting trees are unsuitable there because of power infrastructure and that sunflowers can assist phytoremediation.
Board member Aaron cautioned the group to avoid mixes containing nonnative or exotic species and recommended vendors that specialize in native seed mixes such as Prairie Moon Nursery. “Be careful with… not getting any exotic species or anything like that in the mix,” Aaron said, and offered to review seed lists with the Chair. Members agreed to research seed sources and coordinate volunteer outreach and watering plans for spring follow-up.
