Historic commission approves projecting sign for 303 West Washington

The Charles Town Historic Landmarks Commission approved a Certificate of Appropriateness for a projecting sign at 303 West Washington Street at its Sept. 9 meeting.
Staff described the building as a contributing vernacular Italianate in the downtown historic district and said the proposed PVC sign measures 19 inches in height and 33 inches in width and complies with the local ordinance limit of 6 square feet and a maximum 5-foot projection. "The sign is made out of PVC or polyvinyl chloride. It is 19 inches in height... and 33 inches wide," the staff presentation stated.
The commission opened a public hearing on the application; no members of the public spoke and the applicant was not present. After a motion to approve the application as recommended by staff, the commission carried the motion by voice vote (ayes). The chair welcomed the owner back to downtown and asked staff to assist with next steps for the permit process.
What happens next: The applicant will complete any required paperwork and proceed with permits and installation consistent with the COA conditions and applicable sign ordinance requirements.
