Commission proposes gate and signage to clarify legal trail at Cook’s Pond Road

The Conservation Commission discussed a plan to clarify where a Legal Trail ends near Cook’s Pond Road and to reduce trespassing on adjacent private property.
Commissioner Ryan Gumbart reported meeting with landowner Bob Dunham, who has observed trespassing on his surveillance cameras where the legal trail meets Dunham’s private trail around Cook’s Pond. Gumbart proposed installing a farm gate at the point where the public Legal Trail ends, adding a sign and a map that show where public access continues and where it does not, and printing the materials at Doolittle’s to ensure they are weatherproof. Bob Dunham was described as amenable to the proposal.
Ryan offered to supply a farm gate and a post; remaining tasks include refining the map and sign design and seeking approval from the Highway Department and the Selectboard before installation. Ryan will notify Dunham that the commission will prepare the map and sign and will take the proposal to town officials for approval.
