Board, YMCA discuss parking, safety and public access for proposed playground
Summary
During the Feb. 26 special meeting the Douglass Township Board raised parking and safety questions about the YMCA playground proposal; the YMCA said the playground will have bollards, meet safety requirements, and the park will be open to the public during non-operating hours.
Board members pressed the YMCA on parking adequacy and safety measures for the proposed playground adjacent to the YMCA early learning facility at 144 Holly Rd.
Chairman Joshua Stouch raised concerns about the number and location of parking spaces near the playground. YMCA representative John Derham said the playground will be surrounded by bollards and will comply with applicable safety requirements. Derham also said the YMCA will evaluate and, if necessary, relocate parking spaces to meet the facility rule the YMCA cited of one space per 15 students plus one space per worker.
Stouch asked whether the playground would be open to the public outside YMCA operating hours. Derham confirmed it would be available during non-operating hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. The board provided copies of the draft Cooperation Agreement and the updated resolution for the YMCA's legal review; final parking arrangements and paperwork (including a W-9) remained outstanding at the meeting.
