The Jefferson County Board heard staff read Resolution No. 2026-31 and a traffic engineering study recommending a 45 mph posted speed limit on a portion of 3800 East Road.
Samuel Scott, the engineer who prepared the study, told commissioners the 85th-percentile observed speed and traffic counts supported a 45 mph limit in the studied segment, but that lowering a limit requires engineering justification such as high pedestrian activity or crash patterns. Several commissioners and residents said they worry that motorists will treat a posted 45 mph as an invitation to drive 55 mph and expressed concerns about school and pedestrian activity along the corridor.
After discussion, the board agreed to seek input from the sheriff’s office and tabled the resolution to revisit it once sheriff and additional data are available. Staff said the county can re-run counters and update the speed study if conditions change.
