Board approves renaming Clyde Boyd Middle School to Sand Springs Middle School

The Sand Springs Public Schools board voted to change the facility name from Clyde Boyd Middle School to Sand Springs Middle School after discussion and a formal motion at the board meeting. Superintendent Kristen Durkee said the rebranding is intended to clarify the district—s identity outside the community while keeping historical elements in place.

Durkee told the board the team wants to "honor history for sure" while improving recognition for the district beyond Sand Springs. She said the district will preserve existing commemorative plaques and asked the architect Ethos to design a public display of the school—s history so the community can see it outside the building.

The vote followed earlier public comment from Mark Boyd, who identified himself as the grandson of Clyde Wood Sr. and urged the board to maintain Clyde Boyd's legacy. "I just want you guys serious, serious, serious, discussion, discussion. Do what you can to maintain my grandfather's legacy," Mark Boyd told the board.

The board agenda records a motion "to approve the name change from Clyde Boyd Middle School to Sand Springs Middle School" moved by Miss Spoon and seconded by Miss Hanlon; the meeting minutes show recorded "Aye" votes from Hanlon, Naugle (Nagle), Spoon and Mullins, and the board adopted the local name change. Superintendent Durkee noted the state department of education will update the official records after the district submits the board minutes.

What remains unchanged, Durkee stressed, are two named facilities tied to the site: the sports complex will retain Clyde Boyd—s name and the Thurman Garrett Auditorium will remain labeled. The district will add a public-facing history display so residents who do not enter the school can still see the historical markers.
