Rangely police report UPS failure in dispatch, hiring in progress

Police supervisor Ty reported to the council that an unstable UPS (backup battery) unit caused repeated power interruptions at the dispatch center, which in turn damaged door keycard circuits and created unanticipated repair needs. "We lost power, probably a 100 times the other day at least, and it would come on, come down, come back on, come back down," Ty said, describing the repeated faults and the decision to have Bearcom and a 911 tech address the issue on Sept. 30.

Ty said the department temporarily bypassed the UPS to mitigate ongoing faults and that they will seek an estimate for repairs; the cost is not yet known. He also gave a personnel update: three applicants applied for a full-time officer position (two remain under consideration) and a previously offered conditional dispatcher position was rescinded. Ty highlighted training: Officer Johnson completed ABLE de-escalation training and the agency holds a Western Slope certification in that area.

Council members asked whether UPS repairs would exceed approved 911 board costs; Ty said not at present but cautioned that door repairs and other unexpected costs remain to be estimated.
